Here’s how it goes: there will be 5 groups of about 23 images in each group. Each group will consist of works from various decades and will be shown for a month or so. At the end of the month a new group will rotate in.

This is the fourth rotation; Group Four follows –

After the term was over I was clearing some student lockers where I found a number of bags of clay getting dry, already too stiff to throw with. It seemed a pity to pass it on to the whole dry/wet cycle again. I decided to play with it – see what I could do. Already semi-hard, it took some pounding to give it any shape. But then I realized it responded well to the pounding and I found myself intrigued by its normally useless qualities.

My stock in trade for 40 years had been directed by clay at its best; soft but sturdy, made-to-order for wheel thrown forms. This clay was “no good” for such purposes and should likely be reprocessed.

As I attempted working with it some things became clear; this was exactly the opposite of what I normally did! For all my working life the unchallenged goal was to make round, light, pregnant, swollen, volumetric spheres and then turn them into something. I love them – we love them. What now? Here I was; condensing and impacting, pounding and contracting – yet gaining weight through its solid mass.

Then it came to me. This was shadow work.

Art making can be, at its best, an invitation to a confrontation. The artist confronts himself and the record of that meeting is an invitation for the viewer to do the same. There – that is the famous risk-taking we are always talking about. The real risk is daring to confront yourself. The creative act is turning yourself inside out. Art has now become the Love Boat. Art should be a boat looking for an iceberg.

The mental institutions are full of people who have seen too much of God. Because they hadn't the means to express it, to give it back out again, their bodies couldn't deal with it. Art is a way to ground creative energy from God.

So the person who has eaten his shadow spreads calmness, and shows more grief than anger. If the ancients were right that darkness contains intelligence and nourishment and even information, then the person who has some of his or her shadow is more energetic as well as more intelligent.

Once the psyche finds out you've plugged in the telephone, it'll start calling you up, giving you the latest chapter of your life story. The whole point of working with your dreams/art is to change our lives in a very real way. Otherwise, it is just an intellectual or fantasy. The point of integrating these experiences is to do some healing and to expand awareness of who you are and your place in the world.
