Here’s how it goes: there will be 5 groups of about 23 images in each group. Each group will consist of works from various decades and will be shown for a month or so. At the end of the month a new group will rotate in.

This is the second rotation; Group Two follows –

My most important method is improvisation. When that element is fully operating what comes out is pure invention, melodies never heard before present. The improviser must be at his or her best responding to the moment with clear respect for novelty so that what comes out will not only be unforeseen but essential. You will take yourself to places you never imagined were reachable. Only by stepping into emptiness can you fill the impossible with your work. The beauty of improvisation is that you can do more than you can calculate, can soar far beyond anything you can plan; create way past one’s ability.

Imagine error turning into into good fortune. The improviser specializes in making the most of what is commonly called “accident”, and a map for the impossible journey doesn’t exist. To stray from the path in such a way that it seems you wanted to veer into the woods all along reveals a confidence that takes so long to fully accept. The winding route may prove better than the beeline but you must traverse it without any doubts.

Errol Garner made his piano smile through every wrong note. John Cage

would grin impishly as he mixed all music together, appearing random

while being tightly planned. And in the middle of whatever he was

doing, he was always willing to answer the phone – what could be more

important than an interruption?

Only when your action seems without consequence can you realize what it

is that you actually know. Improvisation solves no problems, rights no

wrongs. It is the random mutation in the scheme of art making.

In the midst of an improvisation, the movement and the playing (I will

come back to the matter of Play at another writing) will be toward a

destination that no one can know in advance.
