would grin impishly as he mixed all
music together, appearing random
while being tightly planned. And in
the middle of whatever he was
doing, he was always willing to answer
the phone – what could be more
important than an interruption?
Only when your action seems without
consequence can you realize what it
is that you actually know.
Improvisation solves no problems, rights no
wrongs. It is the random mutation in
the scheme of art making.
In the midst of an improvisation, the
movement and the playing (I will
come back to the matter of Play at
another writing) will be toward a
destination that no one can know in
