Here’s how it goes: there will be 5 groups of about 23 images in each group. Each group will consist of works from various decades and will be shown for a month or so. At the end of the month a new group will rotate in.

This first group is representative of all the groups, each consisting of a mix of work from the sixties to the current decade. I’ve done this to highlight the variety of form I believe is evident throughout the passing years. I was not really aware of this trait until I began this project. It may be unusual or not but I hope you find it an interesting way to view an extended body of work. Another thought is that although the variety is broad, there is also a consistency of relationship present in the work. Maybe I can claim that I squeezed a lot of ideas out of a few pounds of clay without endlessly repeating myself. There is some pottery shown although I don’t claim to be a Potter. I didn’t have the discipline – did not make enough to get to the flowering. The pots shown are pretty good but I know the difference. I would often start making pots with intention but then I would be pulled away – get lost in the roots! What is this new thing?

Still – I pay homage to the Potters because the world of the potters craft influenced me so very much. The main influence was examining form through repetition. The relative speed of throwing, forming, combining, changing direction is invaluable in keeping the still undisclosed image close by.

The images I've selected for this first group consist of a few works from the sixties right up to more recent work. They represent over 60 years of musing with clay.

The variety of firing choices over time embraced every combustible method known; low fire, high fire, stoneware, raku & smoke, even bisque fires where the clay bisque was broken and reassembled. Also salt/sodium fires and wood fires.

There too is a scattering of pottery shown, although most work addresses sculptural issues. Every once in a while I enjoy spending some time on domestic ware as a way to pay tribute to those anonymous Potters that kept clay work from disappearing.

There are also 2 examples of my latest work: Wall Reliefs with Encaustic Surfaces.

Every day we slaughter our finest impulses. That is why we

get a heart-ache when we read those lines written by the

hand of a master and recognize them as our own, as the

tender shoots which we stifled because they lacked the faith

to believe in our own powers, our own criteria of truth and

beauty. Every man, when he gets quiet, when he becomes

desperately honest with himself, is capable of uttering

profound truths. We all derive from the same source. There is

no mystery about the origins of things. We are all part of

creation, all kings, all poets, all musicians. We have only to

open up, only to discover what is already there.
