Classes
Classes are offered to encourage people from the age of sixteen and up to both begin and expand their exploration in the ceramic arts. Classes are conducted by Clay Space staff and our area's well know ceramic artists. Classes are offered mornings from 10 am to 12 pm and in the evenings from 6 pm to 8 pm. The sessions last 8 weeks and meet once per week. Beginning classes are offered as two four week blocks, allowing students the option of a four or eight week class. Classes will cover basic wheel throwing and hand building techniques for beginning and intermediate students. For the more advanced students a special topic class is offered each session. Class sizes are limited to ten students unless otherwise specified.

"Check-it-Out!" Sessions

These two hour introductions to clay work are for people who are interested in experimenting with clay for the first time. It's a great way to see if you would enjoy signing up for an eight week class. Invite a friend or relative to join you. Come for a relaxing evening or afternoon.

Potter's Wheel
: Josh Allen / Jim Laub
These sessions will give you a chance to see if you enjoy working on the potter's wheel. At the end of class you can choose a piece or two to have fired. A short follow-up session will give you the chance to glaze what you make.
• Class fee: $40.00 (includes clay, glaze and firing) Choose from one of the following sessions:

Beginning Wheel Throwing, "Getting Over the Hump": Josh Allen
• Tuesday evening, starting July 6th, from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm
• Class fee: $235 for the 8 weeks, includes 25lbs. of clay, glazes, and firing.
• All students will have access to the studio on the day of class plus 10 additional visits to use at their leisure.
 
In this course we will introduce and set the fundamental basics to working with clay on the potter's wheel. We will explore throwing, trimming, and basic glaze application. In using these new found skills, we will create various forms such as mugs, bowls, plates, and small vases.

Hand Building with Julia
:  Julia Damon
• Wednesday mornings, starting July 7th, from 10 am to Noon
• Class fee: $235 for the 8 weeks, includes 25lbs. of clay, glazes, and firing.
• All students will have access to the studio on the day of class plus 10 additional visits to use at their leisure.

An introduction to the variety of ways to hand build with clay. Make beautiful forms using different techniques. Become familiar with clay terms, processes, high fire glazes and a few decorative tricks. Create functional forms with your hands!

Cold-Connected Jewelry, Metal and Mixed Media: Courtney Kemp
• Wednesday evenings from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm beginning July 7th
• Class Fee: $185 plus materials fee

Students will explore a number of metal-based jewelry elements, as well as non-traditional found materials such as woods, plastics, and paper to create a pendant, earring set, or brooch that will exemplify their own personal style and tastes. Utilizing riveting and cold-connections to attach different elements of jewelry pieces together, students will gain skills in traditional jewelry techniques such as sawing, filing, and stamping metals in new and innovative ways. Objects and materials of personal interest and significance will also be introduced into these objects, allowing for a great variety of both skills and styles.

An In-Depth Introduction to Working with Clay: Bob Richardson
• Thursday evening, starting July 8th, from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm
• Class fee: $235 for the 8 weeks, includes 25lbs. of clay, glazes, and firing.
• All students will have access to the studio on the day of class plus 10 additional visits to use at their leisure.

For those with some experience or none at all this is the class for you. Join Bob as he shares with you his knowledge and understanding of this marvelous material. Learn as he takes this ancient craft and breaks it down to its fundamental basics. Throughout this eight week class you will be shown techniques in both hand building and wheel working. With the completion of your projects and Bobs help you will come away from this class with a greater understanding of what this material is and how to work with it.

Tile and China Mosaics: Sue Soaring Sun
• Monday evening, starting July 12th, from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm
• Class fee: $160 plus $20 materials fee.

The new Mosaics Workshop provides instruction, materials and a place to work on projects of your choice. The first night, we will all complete a simple take-away mosaic project. After that, select your own materials and projects, such as birdhouses, planters, or small pieces of furniture. Each week, new materials or techniques will be demonstrated, followed by class time to work on your projects. Students can also return to use the Clay Space studio two hours per week on their own. We will cover mosaic design, terminology, materials, tools, fixatives, grout, etc. Students will receive handouts covering materials, techniques, etc. We’ll have an informal art show with some visiting mosaic artists on the last night of class. Beginners and experienced mosaic artists, age 16 and up, are welcome.

Coptic-Bound Journals: Judy Alison (4 week class)
• Thursday evening, starting August 5th, from 6:00 pm to 9:00 pm
• Class fee: $110 plus $15 materials fee.

Make your own unique journal or sketchbook! Using traditional bookbinding methods & materials, this class will lead you through the totally fun process of making your own decorative “paste paper”.  Judy will guide participants through the steps of using the paste paper you patterned to fashion your journal cover and learn the techniques of stitching and assembling signatures. The end result will be a personally handcrafted, coptic bound, sturdy journal.  This class is hands-on and for all levels of students.

Working with Raku: Jesse Jones (4 week class)
• Monday evening, starting August 9th, from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm
• Class fee: $160, includes 25lbs. of clay, glazes, and firing.

Get up in close with "Fire" itself. Join experienced ceramicist Jesse Jones as he leads you through this interactive and decorative process. Jesse will discuss the various forms and clays that are best for raku as well as walk the students safely through the firing procedure. Within this class Jesse will install the understanding and confidence you need to take your ceramics to next level.

Are you a little intimidated by the potters wheel? Then this class is for you! Hand building is fast, fun, and a more forgiving way of working with clay. Make almost anything you can imagine - no centering required. Discover many ways to form and texture your pieces. Add depth and richness to your work with colored slip decoration. Learn the ways of glaze application and overglaze decoration which can add both graphic and textural interest. Beginning, intermediate, and advanced students are welcome as well as those who work on the wheel and are interested in graphics and decoration techniques with slips and glazes.
